Privacy policy
Effective October 17, 2026
Indexwise is a Chrome extension that checks the SEO of web pages. It is built to work without collecting anything about you. This policy explains what the extension touches, where that data goes, and how to remove it.
The short version
- Indexwise does not receive, store or see your pages, your audits or your Google data.
- The one thing that leaves your browser is an anonymous error report when Indexwise itself breaks. It contains no page addresses and no personal data, and you can turn it off.
- There is no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking.
- Everything Indexwise saves is kept in your own browser.
- Google Search Console and Google Analytics are optional. If you connect them, the extension talks to Google directly with read-only access.
- We never sell or share your data.
What the extension reads
The page you are auditing. When you click the Indexwise icon, the extension reads that page's HTML, links, images, structured data and performance timings so it can run its checks. If you choose "Allow on all sites", it can also do this as you switch tabs, and it can fetch other pages (for example robots.txt, sitemaps, linked pages, or pages you list for a bulk audit or a competitor comparison). These requests go from your browser straight to those websites. Nothing is sent to us.
Google Search Console data, only if you connect it. When you click Connect, Chrome asks you to sign in with Google and grant read-only access (webmasters.readonly). Indexwise then reads search performance (clicks, impressions, position, queries, pages, devices, countries), URL inspection results and sitemaps for the properties you have access to. It cannot change anything in your Search Console account.
Google Analytics data, only if you connect it. Connecting Analytics is a separate step. When you click "Connect Google Analytics", Chrome asks you to grant read-only access (analytics.readonly). Indexwise then lists your Analytics properties and their web streams to find the one for the page you are viewing, and reads that page's sessions, daily trend, traffic channels, devices, engagement and the events that happen on it, plus the site's overall totals for comparison and which events are marked as key events. It cannot change anything in your Analytics account.
What is stored, and where
Indexwise stores the following in Chrome's local extension storage on your computer. It is not synced to us or anywhere else.
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Score history for pages you have checked | To show how a page's score has changed |
| Watch list (up to 3 URLs) and their last known state | To alert you when a watched page changes |
| Fix-it checklist ticks | To remember which fixes you have done |
| Report branding (name, color, logo) if you set it | To brand the reports you download |
| Google sign-in token, if you connect Search Console or Analytics, and whether Analytics is connected | Managed by Chrome, so you don't have to sign in each time |
Search Console and Analytics data is fetched when you view it and is not saved by Indexwise. Analytics results are kept in memory while the side panel is open, so switching tabs does not ask Google again, and are dropped when the panel closes. The one exception: if a watched page loses Google clicks or position, the watch list keeps that alert (for example the before and after numbers) until you remove the page.
Error reports
When something inside Indexwise fails (for example a bug stops an audit from finishing), the extension sends a short error report so we can find and fix the bug. It is on by default. To turn it off, open Options in the side panel and untick Send anonymous error reports.
A report contains the error message, the place in Indexwise's own code where it happened, which part of the extension it was (side panel or background), the Indexwise version, and the browser's name and major version. Before it is sent, web addresses, email addresses and anything that looks like a sign-in token are removed from the message. A report never contains the page you are auditing, its content, your history, your settings or any Search Console or Analytics data. There is no user ID, so reports cannot be linked to you or to each other.
Reports go to an error-tracking server we run ourselves (GlitchTip, at glitchtip.lexserver.org). Like any web request, a report reaches the server from your IP address. The server keeps only a shortened version with the last part removed (for example 203.0.113.0), which points to a network area, not to your device. Reports are used only to fix bugs, are not shared or sold, and are deleted automatically after 90 days. At most 10 reports are sent each time the panel is opened, and the same error is sent only once.
Background checks
If you add pages to your watch list, Indexwise re-checks them about every 6 hours while Chrome is open, and shows a notification when something important changes. If Search Console is connected, these checks also look up the page's recent Google clicks and position. Remove pages from the watch list to stop this.
Permissions and why they are needed
- activeTab and scripting: read the page you are auditing after you click the icon.
- sidePanel: show results next to the page.
- storage: save the items listed above, and whether error reports are on, in your browser.
- alarms and notifications: run watch-list checks and tell you about changes.
- identity: let you sign in to Google for Search Console and Google Analytics, only when you choose to.
- Access to all sites (optional): requested only if you click "Allow on all sites". You can remove it at any time in Chrome's extension settings.
Google user data
Indexwise's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Search Console and Analytics data is used only to show you SEO information inside the extension. It is not transferred to anyone, not used for advertising, not used to train AI models, and not read by people.
Support link
The panel may show a "Support Indexwise" link to a donation page (Ko-fi). It is an ordinary link that opens in a new tab only if you click it. Indexwise sends nothing to that page, and the donation does not unlock anything. What the donation page does with your data is covered by its own privacy policy.
Copying and downloading
Some features let you copy a report or an AI prompt to your clipboard, or download a report or CSV file. Those copies go only where you paste or save them.
Deleting your data
- Click "Disconnect Google" in the Search Console or Analytics tab to revoke Indexwise's access to Search Console and Google Analytics. You can also remove it from your Google Account permissions.
- Removing the extension from Chrome deletes everything it stored.
Children
Indexwise is a tool for website owners and is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update the date above. If a future version needs to send anything else off your device, this page will say so first.
